Background about Wild things!
Wild things! is a Scottish environmental education charity working in Moray, Grampian and the Highlands. Since 2003, Wild things! has enabled over 5000 children and young people and adults to learn from and be inspired by their local natural environment and the remote wilderness regions of Scotland. Our programmes encourage a mutually beneficial relationship between individuals and their natural environment: we provide the opportunity for our participants to understand, appreciate and care for the natural environment whilst at the same time acquiring new skills confidence, and interests.
Our team of highly skilled and enthusiastic Wild things! instructors deliver programmes ranging from Nature Club to expedition Wilderness and Bushcraft courses. Since repeat visits to wild places have a far more profound impact on the individual than a ‘one off’ experience, many of our programmes span 6 weeks, one year or three years.
Our activities benefit the young (from 5 years) to the 'not so young' (55 years and above!). We work in partnership with a range of organisations providing extra support for young people considered ‘at risk’ or who are struggling within mainstream education.
Wild things! courses support the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, the 3-18 Scottish Science Curriculum and the Eco-schools programme.
In 2008, we also piloted a Wilderness/Bushcraft skills programme for Adults recovering from addiction thanks to support from the Dischma Trust and Scottish Natural Heritage. Due to the success of this programme we are now looking to integrate come more of these courses into our 2009 diary.
